Mafia party game night: the host's checklist
Updated · Werewolf Narrator
Before you start
For a Mafia party game night, invite 7 to 12 players and deal one Mafia member for every three or four, plus a Detective and a Doctor. Agree house rules before the first deal, keep nights under two minutes and days to five, and expect 20 to 30 minutes a game.
A week before
How many Mafia should you deal?
| Players | Mafia | Detective | Doctor | Civilians |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 3 |
| 6 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 |
| 7 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 3 |
| 8 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
| 10 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 6 |
| 12 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 7 |
| 15 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 9 |
| 18 | 5 | 1 | 1 | 11 |
Treat this as a starting point. If the Mafia win three in a row, take one out. If the town keeps cruising, add a Mafia member or drop the Doctor. The setups by player count list a balanced mix for every size from 5 to 18.

When people arrive
Most game-night arguments come from rules nobody said out loud. Settle these four before anyone sees a card:
- Role reveal on elimination. Revealing helps the town. Hiding makes everyone more paranoid. Pick one for the night and stick to it.
- Ties. Either revote between the tied players, or nobody goes out.
- No-lynch. Can the town choose to eliminate nobody? Allowing it slows the game down.
- Peeking. It's cheating, full stop. Ask people to tap the table at night to cover sounds, which also hides the shuffle of Mafia pointing.
Running the game
Pace is what separates a good Mafia night from a draggy one. Nights should take under two minutes. If the Mafia can't agree on a target in 20 seconds, the narrator picks the player they pointed at first. Days get five minutes on a timer, and the vote happens when it goes off, mid-sentence if necessary. Without a timer, the loudest player runs the table and the quiet ones check out.
Turn the music up a notch at night and back down at dawn. It covers chairs creaking and sleeves rustling, which is how most Mafia members give themselves away in the first round.
Keeping eliminated players busy
Short games are the real fix: at 20 minutes a game, the first player out is back in soon. Until then, give them something to do. Let them keep their eyes open at night and watch in silence, so they know everything and can say nothing. Hand them the timer or the playlist. Or have them write down who they think the Mafia are and check the slips at the end.
If you have more than 15 people, run two tables of seven to nine instead of one big game. Eliminated players can join the next game at the other table, and nobody waits more than ten minutes. One rule for all spectators: no faces. A raised eyebrow from someone who knows the roles can decide a game.

Questions people ask
Is the Mafia party game the same as Werewolf?
Same core game, different costume. Mafia has gangsters, a Detective and Civilians. Werewolf has werewolves, a Seer and Villagers, and its versions usually add more special roles such as the Witch and Hunter.
Who invented the Mafia party game?
Dmitry Davidoff, a psychology student at Moscow State University, created it in the mid-1980s. It spread through Soviet universities and then abroad, where a werewolf-themed version also caught on.
Do you need special cards to play Mafia?
No. A normal deck works: deal black number cards for Civilians, red number cards for Mafia, the King of Hearts for the Doctor and the Queen of Spades for the Detective. Collect and reshuffle after every game.
Can you play Mafia with only 4 people?
You can, but one Mafia against three Civilians leaves almost nothing to discuss and games end in a round or two. Five is the working minimum, and seven or more is much better.
Is Mafia a good game for a work party?
Yes, if you keep it light. Use a timer, skip elimination language that feels too grim for the room, and tell people at the start that lying is the point and nothing said in play is personal.
