Mafia narrator script
Everything the narrator (or moderator) says in a game of Mafia, in order: nightfall, each role, dawn, the vote and the ending. Read it aloud from your phone, print it, or let the app read it for you in a recorded voice.
Nightfall
“Night falls on the town. Everyone… close your eyes.”
Later nights:
“Darkness returns to the town. Close your eyes.”
Calling each role at night
Call the roles in this order every night. Pause the same length for each one, even after they're eliminated, so nobody can tell who is still in.
Mafia
“Mafia, open your eyes. Silently choose your target.”
“Mafia, close your eyes.”
The Mafia open their eyes together and silently point at one player to eliminate. Wait until they agree.
Detective
“Detective, open your eyes. Point to a player to investigate.”
“Detective, close your eyes.”
The Detective points at one player. Give a thumbs up if that player is Mafia, a thumbs down if not.
Doctor
“Doctor, open your eyes. Choose one player to protect tonight.”
“Doctor, close your eyes.”
The Doctor points at one player to protect tonight. Most groups don't allow the same player two nights running.
Dawn: announcing the night
“Everyone, open your eyes! The sun rises over the town…”
If the Doctor saved the target, or nobody died:
“Miraculously… nobody died last night!”
For each death:
“[Name] was found dead, taken out by the Mafia!”
If you reveal roles when players are eliminated:
“They were in the Mafia!”
“They were the Detective!”
“They were a Civilian.”
Day: discussion and the vote
Give the town three to five minutes to talk, then call the vote. Everyone points at once on three.
“Thirty seconds left!”
“Time is up! The town must now vote.”
“It is time to vote!”
The verdict:
“The town has spoken. [Name] is eliminated.”
“The town could not agree. Nobody is eliminated today.”
The end of the game
“The last of the Mafia is gone! The town wins!”
“The Mafia outnumber the town… The Mafia win!”
Lines for extra Mafia roles
Adding variants? Here's how to call the most popular ones.
Vigilante
“Vigilante, open your eyes. Point to someone you want to shoot tonight, or shake your head to hold your fire.”
“Vigilante, close your eyes.”
Call after the Mafia. If the Vigilante shoots a Civilian, many groups take away their gun for the rest of the game.
Bodyguard
“Bodyguard, open your eyes. Point to the player you will protect tonight.”
“Bodyguard, close your eyes.”
If the Mafia target that player, the Bodyguard dies instead.
Godfather
“Godfather and Mafia, open your eyes. Choose your target.”
The Godfather wakes with the Mafia. When the Detective checks the Godfather, give a thumbs down: they look innocent.
Tips for Mafia narrators
- Use the same voice and pace for every role, so nobody can guess roles from your tone.
- Ask everyone to tap the table quietly while their eyes are closed. It hides the sound of the Mafia moving.
- Never react to what you see at night, and never look towards the players you just watched.
- Write each night's choices down. With a Doctor and a Vigilante in play it's easy to lose track.
Questions
What does the narrator say in Mafia?
The narrator puts the town to sleep, wakes the Mafia to choose a target, wakes the Detective and Doctor in turn, then wakes everyone at dawn to announce who was killed or saved. By day they time the discussion and announce the vote.
What order do you call roles in Mafia?
Mafia first, then the Detective, then the Doctor. Extra killers like the Vigilante go after the Mafia. Keep the same order every night so nobody learns anything from the timing.
Should the narrator call roles that are dead?
Yes. Keep calling dead roles and pause for the same length of time, otherwise everyone learns that role is gone.
Can you play Mafia without a narrator?
Yes. Werewolf Narrator reads this script aloud with a recorded voice, tracks the night and announces the results, so the person who would narrate can play instead.
Is this Mafia script free to use?
Yes. Copy it, print it or read it straight from your phone at the table.
