Werewolf vs Mafia

Short answer: they're the same game. Both are social deduction party games where a hidden minority kills one player each night and everyone else tries to vote them out by day. What changes is the theme, the role names and the extra roles each community likes to add.

Where they came from

Mafia was invented in 1986 by Dimitry Davidoff, a psychology student in Moscow, as a game about trust and persuasion. Over a decade later Andrew Plotkin re-themed it with werewolves and villagers, and that version took off with role-card sets that added the Witch, Hunter and Cupid. Today both names are used for the same core game.

Questions

Is Werewolf the same game as Mafia?

Yes. The rules are the same: a hidden minority eliminates players at night, and the majority votes to find them by day. Only the theme and role names change.

Which came first, Mafia or Werewolf?

Mafia. It was created by Dimitry Davidoff in 1986 in Moscow. The werewolf theme came later, in 1997, from Andrew Plotkin, and spread through party games and card sets.

Which is better for beginners?

Either. Mafia's core four roles (Mafia, Detective, Doctor, Civilians) are a clean first game; Werewolf's extra roles add variety once your group knows the basics.

Can one app run both?

Yes. Werewolf Narrator has a Werewolf theme and a Mafia theme with the same rules: switch in settings and the narrator calls the Mafia, the Detective and the town.
