How the Vigilante works

The Vigilante is on the town's side but can kill a player at night, usually once per game, sometimes every night. They wake on their own and point at the player they want to shoot.

If the Vigilante shoots a Civilian, the town loses a player and the Mafia get a free night. In some rule sets a Vigilante who kills an innocent is so wracked with guilt that they die the next night.

How to play the Vigilante

1.Don't shoot on the first night. Wait until the votes and deaths give you a real suspect.
2.Shoot the player the town is split on. A night kill settles an argument the vote can't.
3.Never claim before you shoot. Once the Mafia know, they'll kill you first.

Playing against the Vigilante

1.As Mafia, a Vigilante's shot on an innocent is a gift. Encourage suspicion of quiet Civilians.
2.Two deaths in one night means a Vigilante is active. Work out who they'd suspect and stay off that list.
3.Bait the shot by acting just suspicious enough to draw it onto a partner who's already doomed.

The most common mistake

Shooting on a hunch. A Vigilante who kills an innocent can cost the town the game in one night.

How many shots does the Vigilante get?

Usually one per game. Groups that allow one every night tend to balance it with an extra Mafia member.

Is the Vigilante in Werewolf?

Werewolf's Witch is similar: she has one potion that kills. The Hunter also takes a player down, but only when they die.
